This week students enjoyed an inspiring and informative careers trip to Oakhill Vets, where they were welcomed by farm vets Sophia and Becca (GCA Alumni). Their warm introduction and expert guidance made the visit a fantastic opportunity to see veterinary careers in action.

The visit began in the Equine Department, where students had the unique chance to observe an operation taking place. This rare experience allowed students to see first-hand the teamwork, precision, and specialist knowledge required in veterinary medicine.

Throughout the afternoon, students discovered the wide range of careers linked to veterinary practice, including:

  • Farm Vet
  • Equine Vet
  • Small Animal Vet
  • Veterinary Nurse
  • Veterinary Technician
  • Animal Care Assistant
  • Reception and Client Care Roles
  • Practice Manager

Sophia and Becca also gave students a brilliant insight into the day-to-day life of a farm vet, sharing real stories from the field and explaining the pathways into veterinary medicine, from GCSE choices to university routes and work experience.

Students were then shown a variety of veterinary tools and equipment, and were challenged to guess their uses - an activity that sparked curiosity, discussion, and plenty of laughter!

Overall, it was a highly informative and engaging day, giving students a valuable look at the many opportunities within the veterinary profession and how science-based careers work in real life.

We are extremely grateful to the team at Oakhill Vets for welcoming us so warmly and giving our students such a memorable experience. Their enthusiasm, expertise, and willingness to share their knowledge made the visit truly inspiring for everyone involved.
