As part of our school’s focus on experiencing real places of work, a group of year 9 students visited the working farm at Myerscough College. The trip offered an invaluable opportunity to step into a professional environment, see real jobs in action, and understand how learning in school connects to future careers.
Throughout the morning, students observed the daily routines of a busy farm, watching farm workers care for animals, manage equipment, and keep operations running smoothly. Seeing these processes up close helped pupils appreciate the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and responsibility in a real working environment.
A key focus of the visit was understanding how farms today balance sustainability and efficiency. Students learned how modern agriculture uses technology, data, and careful planning to protect the environment while producing food responsibly. They explored how farms reduce waste, improve animal welfare, and use resources wisely — all essential skills for the future of farming.
The visit also introduced students to a wide range of career paths within the agricultural sector. They discovered roles such as:
- AI Technician – using digital tools and data to improve farm performance
- Sustainability Consultant – helping farms operate in environmentally responsible ways
- Agricultural Nutritionist – designing healthy diets for livestock
- Hoof Trimmer – specialising in animal health and welfare
- Farm Manager – overseeing daily operations and long-term planning
- Farm Auditor – ensuring farms meet industry standards
These examples showed students that agriculture is a diverse and forward-thinking industry, offering opportunities in science, technology, animal care, business, and environmental management.
Workplace visits like this are incredibly valuable for young people. They help students see real careers in action, broaden their horizons, and spark new interests. The Myerscough College trip gave students a deeper understanding of modern farming and the many exciting possibilities it holds for the future.
