A group of our Year 9 students had the chance to step behind the scenes at the Amazon Fulfilment Centre in Bolton this week, discovering what really happens after you click “Place Order”.

Inside one of the UK’s busiest fulfilment centres

Students were taken on a guided tour of the vast warehouse, where they watched the full journey of a product — from arrival on the shelves to being packed and sent out for delivery. They observed the fast‑paced workflow on the factory floor, seeing staff carry out their day‑to‑day tasks with impressive precision and teamwork.

The scale of the operation made a big impression: miles of conveyor belts, automated systems working alongside people, and a carefully organised process designed to get orders out quickly and accurately.

Learning about careers and apprenticeships

A highlight of the visit was a session in Amazon’s Training Academy. Staff explained the wide range of apprenticeship pathways available, from engineering and robotics to business, IT, and operations management. Students were encouraged to ask questions throughout, gaining insight into the skills, qualifications, and personal qualities Amazon looks for in future employees.

Many were surprised by the variety of roles behind the scenes and the opportunities for progression within such a large global company.

Curiosity and questions

Throughout the visit, pupils were able to speak directly with Amazon employees, asking about their experiences, career journeys, and what it’s like to work in such a fast‑moving environment. The visit helped students connect what they learn in school with real-world careers, sparking new ideas about their own futures.

A memorable experience

The trip offered a rare look into one of the world’s most recognisable companies and gave our students a deeper understanding of modern logistics, technology, and career possibilities.

It’s not every day you get to find out exactly what happens to your order once it leaves your basket - but our Year 9's certainly did today.
