Our Year 9 students recently had an eye-opening and empowering experience at the North-West Construction Hub Women in Construction event. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for our girls to delve into the practical skills involved in various construction trades.
Throughout the day, the students rotated through different workshops, getting stuck into brickwork, plastering, and carpentry and joinery. It wasn't just observation either – they had the chance to try their hand at these skills, resulting in some impressive handmade bird boxes and plaster creations that they proudly took home.
A real highlight of the day was hearing from inspiring women who are currently thriving in the construction industry. They shared their personal journeys and shed light on the diverse range of roles available within the sector. Our students were particularly captivated by a young woman who has just embarked on a degree apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying at Vinci Building. Her insights into her journey and her practical advice on future career planning resonated strongly with the girls.
The enthusiastic chatter on the bus ride home was a clear indication of the event's success. Many students expressed how inspiring and engaging the day had been, with some now seriously considering exploring career paths within the construction industry.
This initiative has undoubtedly opened our students' minds to the exciting possibilities within construction and challenged any preconceived notions. It was a valuable experience that showcased the diverse skills and rewarding careers available to women in this vital sector. Well done to all the Year 9 students who participated, and a big thank you to MC Construction, Vinci Building, Preston College and the inspiring women who shared their experiences!
